The New York Times recently took notice of our “under the radar” sloping suburb in the hills – alluding to the pros & cons that come with getting, well, a little closer to the radar.
Like other desirable places, Mountainside is dealing with the transformation that inevitably occurs when outsiders discover a “hidden treasure.”

With a modest downtown and several residential streets stretching up the southern slopes of the Watchung Reservation hills, this borough of 6,685 residents can feel like a sudden detour into Vermont after you have left the busier neighboring towns of Westfield, Summit and Scotch Plains.
Houses further up the reservation offer views of New York City’s skyline. They also sit on steeply sloping properties, which may be more appealing to urban buyers, said Janice Pecoraro, an agent with Signature Realty. “The only downside is that your backyard is built into the mountains,” she said. “City people don’t mind because they’re not used to having a yard, and they like the view. But Jersey buyers like to have a yard where they can put up the gym set.”
